Assessments and Rubric

This page covers assessment in the Learning Center: the three assessment types: quick checks, assignments, and quizzes: the Competency Rubric that sets the standard, and the safety gates that must be passed before live-animal work. This page summarizes how assessment works; the credential requirements themselves are stated in Certifications and Credentials.

Quick checks: explain your thinking

The quick check is the main assessment type, and it is not multiple choice. After each lesson, the check surface asks you to explain your thinking in writing, in a box labeled "Your reasoning."

When you submit, Professor evaluates your response against the companion material, and the attempt is recorded with

  • A score and a pass or needs-work result.
  • The stage the attempt sits at in your progression.
  • The specific misconception, if your reasoning went wrong, named in plain words.
  • Feedback stating what to do next.
  • A short summary of what the attempt showed.

Feedback follows the diagnosis. Depending on the result, Professor will reframe the idea ("Let's reframe this"), point you back to the companion, reteach the idea by another approach, or set a parallel question.

If you are stuck, use "I need a different explanation." That asks Professor for a reframe: one starting point, not the answer: and it does not use up your attempt. Help with understanding and evaluation of understanding are kept separate on purpose.

Assignments and quizzes

Assignments come from the companion's practice exercises, quizzes from its section checks, and the applied project becomes the capstone project. Starting an item makes it the active work for your day; submitting it records an attempt in the same way as a quick check.

Two rules govern all submitted work

  1. Submission is not a grade. Turning work in is an event. What the work shows is the assessment.
  2. There is no grade point average. The grades view tracks what you can do. It carries a notice that its scores are demonstration records and that Professor does not turn completion into a grade.

The Competency Rubric

The Competency Rubric is the standard across the Leashed pathways. Every row of the rubric must reach "Competent," and safety-critical rows are pass or fail. There is no averaging: a strong theory row does not balance out a safety row.

In the classroom this is a weekly practice, not a document you read once. Live-client work: grooms and training sessions: is assessed against rubric rows, and the Friday schedule block is a rubric review with your instructor.

Safety gates

A safety gate is a module that an instructor must sign off before you begin live-animal work at that level. It is a requirement, not a recommendation, and the classroom does not advance you into live-animal blocks without the sign-off recorded.

PathwaySafety gates
IPDGIPDG-103 (before any live-animal work), IPDG-302 (before advanced live-animal work)
PDTPDT-201
ACAACA-201
PPSPPS-104, PPS-105
CATCAT-102
PPCPPC-105, 201, 306, 403, 405, 410

The pathways are described in Leashed Diploma Pathways. If you are an employer evaluating a credential, the safety-gate sign-offs are the first thing to ask about: they are the record that no learner handled a live animal until an instructor confirmed the learner was ready.

What an accepted attempt means

Notice

Reasoning accepted by Professor is formative evidence, not certified mastery. An accepted attempt shows that your thinking was sound in that attempt. Certification comes from the full record: attempts over time, practicum hours, instructor sign-offs, and the capstone panel. No single interaction, however strong, replaces that record.

For instructors

The attempts record shows scores and the misconceptions learners actually made, in their own words. If several learners reach the same misconception on the same check, treat that as a signal about the lesson, not as separate individual failures, and intervene where the pattern points. See Instructor Tools.
