Most kittens don't need a bath or a haircut at all — their first visit is usually a nail trim, ear check, and gentle combing to get them comfortable being handled. For longhaired breeds like Persians, Ragdolls, and Maine Coons, early positive handling prevents the matting battles of adulthood.

Kittens can meet the groomer around 12–16 weeks, after their core vaccinations are underway and your vet clears them for out-of-home visits. Like puppies, bring proof of the vaccinations they've had so far. Many owners wait until the kitten is spayed or neutered and recovering well, folding a nail trim into a vet-adjacent trip. There's no single right answer — but earlier, gentler exposure beats a first visit at age three when the cat is already matted and terrified.

Expect a nail trim (front paws at minimum, back paws if the kitten allows), a gentle ear check and cleaning if needed, and a comb-through to introduce brushing — especially around the armpits and behind the ears where mats form first. Some kittens tolerate a warm washcloth wipe-down; very few need a real bath at this age. The session runs 15–30 minutes, and the groomer stops the moment the kitten's stress signals escalate — flattened ears, hard panting, freezing up. A kitten who leaves unstressed comes back willingly.
